Pop (Jack / John) Burvill (Burwill) acted as a pilot on many Channel swimming escort and support boats.

This is actually a picture of John (known as Jack and Pop)’s son Jackie (real name John Alfred Ernest Burwill) who died aged 20. He was involved in many swimming competitions because his father was a channel pilot. He was born in 1927 and died in 1947, both in Dover. He is buried in St Mary’s Cemetery, Dover. We believe ‘Jackie’ was about 11 years old in this photograph.
