Richards, Sam
Born 30/8/1875 in Bimingham, England, son of Samuel Snr., and emigrated in 1885 to Boston, USA at age 9. Learnt to swim in London age 6. Ferule maker for brush makers J.C. Pushee & Sons in Boston. Married wife Carrie in 1899
He supposedly came to the UK to make an attempt before the 1914 war but negotiations with The Times for prize money fell through because they were offering it to British swimmers and regarded Richards as American; they suggested he reside in the UK for 3 years to reclaim his citizenship. Richards returned to the US without making an attempt
