His philosophy, for Sam Rockett: “Swimming the channel is like playing cards; the swimmers must hold the four aces, for a successfull swim; physical fitness, mental fitness, good pilot, and good weather. But for a record he must hold the joker too; good luck.” 

In 1958 he swam France to England in 12 hrs 45 mins. In 1959 he swam it in 11hrs 33mins. He swam England to France in 12hrs 49mins. He was unsuccessful on three occasions in 1957 all France England.
