Abortive Channel Race - Sporting Life 22/9/1891
The swimmers and entourage got to Dover on the morning of Sunday 20th. By this time Bownes, Gautier and Taylor had signed up for the swim with Dalton, Fisher and Albert
Bad weather meant landing at Cap Gris Nez was impossible and the party was stuck in Dover. Albert decided conditions were not going to improve and returned to London, the others remaining in Dover for better conditions on the Monday. The event now became farcical with various hired or promised boats not turning up, being reduced to just one small trawler, and arguments breaking out over paying Fisher back for the breakfast he had bought for everyone. Fisher stormed off but bad weather once again prevented the rest leaving Dover. Finaly, the race was cancelled late on Tuesday.
