Bakr Hussain, Egypt

BAKR HUSSEIN from Cairo. He started his swim at Cap-Gris-Nez on August 15. Bakr was aged 26 years. The swim was finished in a thunderstorm. His time was 18hrs 12mins.

The swim was recognised by the Egyptian Federation. Kathleen Mayoh, a 20 year old Factory girl completed her swim in 16hrs 15 mins and Victor Birkett, an estate agent, swam for 15 hrs 35 mins. Although all of the swims were completed at the same time, only Kathleen Mayoh,and Victor Birkett are recognised by the Channel Swimming Association. BAKR HUSSEIN is not recognised by the Channel Swimming Association.

His trainer and manager COL. DR. M. SABRY considered The Channel Association unworthy. Full transcript can be seen in the Folkstone Gazette, October 1950. The “Across The Dover Straits ” booklet, also printed by the Dover Express, records this swim and mentions other Egyptian swimmers who swam on the same night and failed.
