Bernard Cyril Freyberg after abandoning his swim

Glass negative picture of Bernard Cyril Freyberg being helped from the water by two helpers along side the war department boat, Langdon. He was within 440yds of the Coastline (Hope Point) The swim took Place on Aug 4th 1925. He swam for 16hrs 24 mins. He went on to make a further four unsuccessful attempts. All of them in 1926; 31st July, no time; 8th August 7hrs 55mins; 5th September 8hrs 35mins; 20th September 9hrs 38 mins. He was awarded the V.C. & D.S.O.
