Bill Pickering - launching support boat
Launching a support boat after his successful record breaking channel swim in 1955. In the photograph is Bill Pickering, Ray Scott (Observer ), Lewis Latham (Trainer ) and two crew men. Bill who is a vegetarian was sponsored by the people of his home town, Bloxwich.
He started from St Margaret’s Bay at 8.36 pm, on the 26 August, and finished at Cap Blanc Nez at 10.42 am on Aug 27 in a new record time of 14 hours 06 minutes. The swim started 2 1/2 hours after high water. Finishing time was taken when he stood up, 30 yards out to sea; the Rules were changed in 1958. He was piloted by John Burwill with his boat June Rose.
