Captain Matthew Webb Lithograph
Captain Matthew Webb. Lithograph. Lithographed by Maclure and MacDonald from a photograph by Lambert Weston and Son. Issued as a supplement to the Dover Standard August 1875.
This gentleman was the first person to swim across the Straits of Dover unaided. After a failed attempt on the 12th August 1875, he succeeded on the 24th. He dived in from the Admiralty Pier and, swimming an actual distance of 39 miles, arrived safely in Calais some 21 hours and 45 minutes later.
