Captain Webb memorial, original sculptor's model
Captain Webb memorial. This sepia photograph is of the sculptor F.W. Doyle-Jones’ scale model of the memorial to Captain Matthew Webb, the first unaided cross-channel swimmer.
The memorial was unveiled on 8th June 1910 and originally stood on the lawn in front of the now destroyed Burlington Hotel. After the Second World War it stood for many years at the eastern end of Marine Parade but it has now been re-sited approximately in its original position on the lawn in front of the Gateway Flats.
