Captain Matthew Webb: A Coalport Porcelain Plate Commemorating the Swimming of the Channel, 1875, of shaped circular form with gadrooned rim, transfer printed in blue with a central bust portrait of the great swimmer within a named ropetwist reserve and vignettes of Ironbridge and Dover cliffs, with inscription “Born at Dawley Salop 1848, Swam the Channel 1875, Died at Niagara 1883”, within formalised foliate borders with the Shropshire crest and “Floreat Salopia”, printed mark in blue and “Made for Mrs H S Jones, Dawley, August 1909” {17cm diameter}
