A number of attempts to swim the Channel were made between August and October 1949 by the Egyptian swimmers: Six Man Relay Team succeeds E to F 5/8/49; Mareeh Hassan Hamed fails F to E 29/8/49; Fahmy Attallah fails F to E 4/9/49; Abdel Moneim Abdu fails F to E 4/9/48; Hassan Abdel Rehim succeeds E to F 17/9/49; Mahri Hassan Hamad succeeds F to E 18/9/49 (31 year old Army Warrant Officer. Cap Gris Nez to St. Margarets Bay); Fahmy Attallah fails F to E 2/10/49
