Neukirchen made three unsuccessful attempts; the first was from France to England in 1960, 14hrs 12mins. In 1961 he attempted a England to France and swam for 17hrs and 42mins. In 1962 he again attempted England to France and swam for 3 hrs, 41 mins.

Claudia McPherson swam the channel in 1963 from France to England, in a time of 17hrs 17mins. She was the youngest swimmer. In 1962 she made one unsuccessful attempt from France to England, she swam for 9hrs.15mins.
