Dover Express editor, Mr. J. Bavington Jones, Webb swim witness
John Bavington Jones, who was editor of The Dover Express at the time of Captain Matthew Webb’s Channel swim (24-25 August 1875). He was one of the fourteen who accompanied Captain Webb throughout the swim. His account of the event appeared in The Daily Telegraph and other publications, including the Dover Express.
He and others signed a sworn affidavit before a lawyer that the swim was carried out without any aids, when some people tried to dispute that he made a successful swim.
