The caption beneath the photograph reads: Mr Jonas, the founder of the Memorial to Captain Webb, who swam from Dover to Calais on August 24th-25th, 1875, laying a wreath on the memorial. Mr. G. Curry, who met his death the following day in the Breakwater swim, is to be seen standing between the Mayor and the memorial.
