The 17-year-old, 5 feet 1 inch, 8 stone, Canadian schoolgirl from Toronto held the youngest swimmer title for many years. She swam Cap Gris Nez to East Wear Bay on 31/7/1955 accompanied by her trainer Gus Ryder and piloted by Jack Burwill, time 14 hours 36 minutes. 

She was also the first person to swim Lake Ontario. She was inducted into The Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 1967.
