Pop BurwIll and Channel Swimmer, Kathleen Mayoh

Pop (Jack/John) Burwill (Burvill) in consultation with Mayoh. He piloted many escort and support boats for Channel Swim attempts. This is Kathleen Mayoh who swam the Channel in 1952, from France to England in 16hrs 55mins.

Kathleen was a Swimming Instructor at the “Billy Butlin’s Holiday Camps” She was unsuccessful 27 July 1951; she swam for 15 hours 20mins.

She was unsuccessful in the 1953 Butlin race, although the 22 year old swam the furthest; all swimers in the race were unsuccessful. Kathleen was 3/4 mile from the beach. She swam for 17hrs 28mins. She received £500 prize money

She also swam a two way Windermere swim, and won Morecambe Bay Championship in 1950.
