Pop Burwill Presentation Ceremony

Pop Jack, (Christened John) Burwill being presented with an award by Mr Hewlet. Pop (Jack / John) Burvill (Burwill) acted as a pilot on many Channel swimming escort and support boats.His first recorded swim was Harry Luscombe (Devon) on August 7th.1927 Luscombe started from Cap-Gris-Nez.at 2.37am and finished 11.22am. 6miles from St. Margarets, time 8hrs 45 mins.Jack (Pop) Burwell piloted using Brockman’s motor boat.He was Assistant Pilot to Harry Sharpe jnr. on Mercedes Gleitze (G.B.) successful swim 1927.15hrs.15mins. recognised by the Channel Swimming Association. He took many swims including Dr. George,Brewster (Eng)Sunny Lowry, Mercedes Gleitze, Elna Anderson. His first successful swim was by Daniel Carpio,in 1947. His trainer was Ted Temme,Time 14hrs.46min.
