T.W. Burgess Souvenir Album presented by Burgess to his Aunt Bertha

‘T.W. Burgess Swims The Channel September 5th-6th 1911’. Souvenir Photgraph Album. Image shows the front cover of a souvenir photograph album produced by J.G. Whorwell & Son photographers, Bench Street, Dover. It was issued to commemorate the successful cross Channel swim made in September 1911 by Thomas William Burgess. Burgess was only the second man to achieve this feat, after Captain Matthew Webb in 1875. The album contains 14 photographs. Presented by Thomas Burgess to a family member: On the first page a hand written dedication reads: ‘To Aunt Bertha with love from Willie’.
