The Metropole Hotel

The Metropole Hotel, which once adjoined a large grocer’s shop of the same name situated in Cannon Street. The date is 1911.  To the left can be seen part of the “provision stores” sign, while on the opposite side there is a sign for a former restaurant. The building later housed a once popular Essoldo Cinema, with a projecting vertical sign to attract attention.  It is said the once luxury class hotel was once the headquarters of Captain Webb and many other Channel swimmers.
