Jabez ‘Jappy’ Wolffe, William Stearne and Ted Heaton mid-swim

Stearne made six unsuccessful attempts. His first was with Wolffe and Heaton, who both also failed, and his second was with Wolffe. From Manchester.

Edward ‘Ted’ Heaton in 1905 – 1911 made 7 attempts but all failed. On 31/8/07 he joined Wolffe and Stearne who also failed. He was the superintendent of Liverpool Corporation Baths

England to France: 26/7/05 (failed 6h 17m), 5/8/07 (failed 10h 2m), 31/8/07 (failed 10h 5m), 3/9/07 (failed 2h 45m), 27/8/09 (failed 15h 20m), 1/9/10 (failed 15h 43m), 8/8/11 (failed 10hrs 30m).

Jabez Wolffe made 21 unsuccessful attempts to swim the Channel from 18 July 1906 to 15 July 1914. He made three attempts in 1906. Two in 1907. Four in 1908. Two in 1909. 2 in 1910. Two in 1911. Two in 1912. One in 1913. and one in 1914. The first World War then put a stop to his attempts.

He swam a double Solent in June 1914. After the War he trained Gertrude Ederle on her unsuccessful attempt in 1925.He then trained three successful Ladies, Hilda Sharp Aug 1928, Peggy Duncan Sept 1930, and Sunny Lowry Aug 1933
