Unveiling of Captain Webb Memorial, Dover. Whorwell Postcard

Hand written on reverse: The Memorial to Capt. Matthew Webb, the first person to swim the Channel. The unveiling ceremony was performed by Lord Desborough, who in 1885 stroked the Oxford Eight from Dover to Calais.

Capt. Webb’s wife, Mrs England, was at the unveiling, as was her daughter Miss Webb, who laid the wreath at the foot of the statue. Mayor Emden can be seen making his speech. The Ceremony took place on Wednesday 8th June 1910.

Webb swam from Dover to Calais, August 24-25th 1875. He drowned at Niagara Falls in 1883.
