Davenport, Professor Horace - 19/09/1906
Description
Started 1.30 pm Victoria Pier, Folkestone, with Douglas. Douglas failed due to strong tide after 2.15 hours, Davenport carried on, covering 5.5 miles in 2.5 hours but was seen to be blue in face and was pulled out half dead due to his exertions and the cold. Greased with special preparation invented by Fred Stratford
Some newspapers say Douglas was making an attempt jointly with Professor Davenport but others say he was just accompanying Davenport and stopped when Davenport pulled away from him. Both men dived in from Victoria Pier, Folkestone, together with Professor Arthur Taylor, who was certainly a pacemaker. Various start times are given - 1pm, 1.30pm and 1.45pm
