Barrett, Miss Clarabelle

Clarabelle Barrett was six feet tall and weighed 200 lbs, 35 years old in 1926.  A longtime member of the National Women’s Life Saving League. The swimming teacher at the James Monroe High School in New York, she wanted only to make enough money to train as a singer

Made two unsuccessful attempts in 1926. On the 2nd of August she swam for 21 hours 40 mins, and was two mile from France in a thick fog. This was the longest unsuccessful swim by a woman. On the 23 Aug she swam for 4 hours, she wore a two-piece silk costume.

She hoped to raise enough money for a singing coach, she had a deep contralto voice. She finally performed at Carnegie Hall.
