SWIMMING. LILY COPPLESTONE’S PLANS. SYDNEY, May 4. Miss Lily Copplestone, the New Zealand swimmer, will sail on the Esperance Bay to-morrow for London. She proposes “to attempt to swim the English Channel.

She arrived in Dover in July 1931 and spent some time in Brighton with trainer Jabez Wolffe, but only made one failed attempt on 9th August 1932. She did become the first person to cross the Channel by aquaplane on 27 June 1932. She left on 13 August 1932 for Canada and competition at Lake Ontario
