Professor H. Douglas was a resident of the east Kent area and held the London 5 Miles swim record

Some newspapers say he was making an attempt jointly with Professor Davenport but others say he was just accompanying Davenport  and stopped when Davenport pulled away from him

Both men dived in from Victoria Pier, Folkestone, together with Professor Arthur Taylor, who was certainly a pacemaker. Various start times are given – 1pm, 1.30pm and 1.45pm
