Miss Ederle held the Worlds amateur swimming records for 300yds, 400 meters, 440 meters, 500 yds, 500 meters and 880 yds (13mins 19 sec’s). One unsuccessful Channel attempt Aug 18 1925 (8h 50s). She wore a red two piece costume, and yellow goggles that she sealed with melted candle wax. Sponsored by New York Daily News. Burgess was paid 10 000 Francs to train her. She played herself in the film ‘Swim Girl Swim’ (1927). She was one of six children. She died in a New Jersey Nursing home.
