Maciel, Romeo

Romeo Maciel, born 1895, was an Argentinian swimmer from São Tomé who crossed the Rio de la Plata in 1922

His son, Miguel Maciel, was a well-known trainer and trained and accompanied Alfredo Camarero when he won the 1959 Butlins Channel Race

Romeo Maciel of Argentina made one attempt on the Channel, on Aug 11 1923 when he swam for 4 hours 30 mins. He was competing for the Daily Sketch £1000 prize. He started from Shakespeare Beach along with Charles Toth and Sam Richards; Enrique Tiraboschi started from France and was the only one to finish. Romeo Marciel finished up in Hospital with gastritis.

In 1922 Romeo set a New World Record, crossing from Colonia to Punta Lara 50km, 300m, in 24hrs 23mins and 40secs.
