Horace Mew, from the Isle of White, made three unsuccessful attempts on the Channel, all England to France; 24 Aug 1905 Swim time 6 hr 22m; 24 July 1906, 8 hrs 04 mins; 28 Aug 1906, 6 hrs 35 min.

Born Sandown, I.O.W. 1869, son of John and Emma Mew. Attended Castle Hill Academy in Mere, Wiltshire, as a boarder. Became a photographer in Portsea, Portsmouth, then moved back to the family home in Sandown to continue the trade. A few years later he opened a studio in Shanklin. Married Jeanie Eveline Gray at Shanklin in 1908. One son, Kenneth Walden Mew born 1910 Shanklin
