Channel swimmer, Romeo Maciel of Argentina in the sea close to a beach.

He made one attempt on the Channel, on Aug 11 1923 when he swam for 4 hours 30 mins. He was competing for the Daily Sketch £1000 prize. He started from Shakespeare Beach along with Charles Toth and Sam Richards; Enrique Tiraboschi started from France and was the only one to finish. Romeo Marciel finished up in Hospital with gastritis.
