Swimmer Charles W. Baker (accompanied Captain Webb)
Charles W. Baker who at the age of 17 (then known as ‘Boy Baker’) accompanied Captain Matthew Webb during his Channel swim, 24-25 August 1875.
Baker rowed alongside Webb during the famous swim, frequently swimming with him. This image was taken many years later. Baker came to be known as ‘The Last Survivor’ of the fourteen who witnessed Webb’s swim. He died in September 1924, aged 66 years.
