BOULOGNE, France, July. The English Channel has defeated Olaf Farstad, the Norwegian swimmer. He had started at 10.44 o'clock yesterday morning at Cape Griz Nez to swim across to Dover, England, but was forced to give up the attempt at three o'clock this morning. Farstad who is a policeman, gave up a mile and a half from the English coast when rough water made continuance impossible. She got within two miles of Cape Gris Nez, France, when she had to be taken out of the water. She was in an exhausted condition. Miss Barrett started her swim from here Monday morning at eight o'clock. It was 5.35 o'clock this morning when she was forced to give up the swim that no woman has ever yet made.
